Description

In Law 12 you will apply Canadian legal principles to cases involving Indigenous, criminal, civil, family, contract and environmental law. Students will also learn about trials, sentencing, corrections and alternatives to incarceration while exploring the Law 12 big ideas:

1. Understanding legal rights and responsibilities allows citizens to participate more fully in society.
2. Laws can maintain the status quo and can also be a force for change.
3. A society’s laws and legal framework affect many aspects of people’s daily lives.
4. Laws are interpreted, and these interpretations may evolve over time as a society’s values and worldviews change.

There are 4 units in this course:

Module 1 Foundations (includes Orientation Course)
Module 2 Criminal Law
Module 3 Civil Law
Module 4 Family Law

This course satisfies the mandatory Social Studies credit for graduation.

Delivery

Student-paced - for those who wish to take responsibility for establishing their own timelines or who need to have maximum flexibility in terms of course work in order to accommodate other activities in their lives.

Assessment

Assessment is the systematic gathering of information about what students know, understand, and are able to do in relation to the curricular competencies and content for this course. Here are the key ways you will be assessed:

• "Formative" submissions on which descriptive feedback is given and no grade.
• Polished submissions in a variety of forms.
• Self-assessment about student learning and growth conducted through phone, electronic, or in person interviews.
• Open-notes Midterm Exam (Units 1 & 2) and Final Assessment (Units 3 & 4).
• Several inquiry, reflective and creative projects

A final mark will be based on the student’s body of work as a whole, taking into consideration both supervised and unsupervised assessments and student overall improvement in learning of the subject throughout the course.
