Secondary Programs Introduction: Grades 8-12
We offer a full range of BC secondary courses. Our programs are customized for:
- students who are home schooled.
- students who would like to enroll in courses not offered by their secondary school.
- students who are unable to take a course at their school due to timetable conflicts.
- adults who are finishing high school graduation.
If a student chooses a teacher-led course, it will include a combination of these elements:
- print materials and audio and video resources on loan from our Resource Library
- internet resources
- teacher-led activities and support
- group projects
- online discussions
- submission of assignments online or by mail
- online grades
- guidance from secondary school counsellors
- invitations to SIDES community outings (some are classroom or program specific)
- course customization for individual students
- English and Mathematics proficiency testing
While students may select the teacher-led delivery option for some courses, this is not an exclusive choice. Where a teacher is leading the course, students have a wider variety of online activities, group assignments, and more interaction with both the teacher and the other students in the program. Some coursework is delivered to a marker, who will grade the work and give some feedback.
NOTE:
- Markers are unable to offer ongoing support or one-to-one tutoring.
- Not all courses are delivered in the same fashion. For example, a grade 11 student might choose a teacher-supported Social Studies 11 course but would then take several courses in modular fashion, submitting some assignments by mail, and choosing to submit some electronically over the Internet. The student's teacher/advisor will report the student's progress and serve as the facilitator of the student's learning plan.
