Prerequisite

Science 10 and Foundations and Precalculus Math 10 or permission from the course teacher.

Description

This newly developed Physics 11 course fully meets the learning outcomes for the new BC Curriculum. It is the pre-requisite for Physics 12.

This course was designed to be engaging, easy to navigate, and to help students come to both a conceptual and mathematical understanding of motion, forces, energy, and electricity at the grade 11 level. Each lesson contains carefully selected practice problems and extra resources.

Online lessons are video-based, and students have complete control over the pace at which they learn—lessons can be paused, resumed and repeated using simple navigation buttons. Examples are interactive with animated step-by-step flash and video whiteboard solutions. Extra resources, including alternate lessons and examples, have been carefully selected to assist students who need additional instruction.

Physics 11 is organized into the following units:

  • Unit 1: Physics Matters
  • Unit 2: Kinematics
  • Unit 3: Dynamics
  • Unit 4: Momentum
  • Unit 5: Energy
  • Unit 6: Electricity
  • Unit 7: Waves & Optics
  • Unit 8: Modern Physics

Students will be assessed with unit tests, lab reports, projects and 2 term tests.

Each unit take home test and the 2 terms tests have a practice test identical in length and style to the real test to help students prepare and study.

Delivery

Student-paced – Students are asked to complete a schedule for themselves using the built in scheduler as one of the first activities in the course. This will give students the big picture of their commitment and progress towards completion.

Summary

At the end of most units, there is a send in assignment which the teacher will use to assess the student’s understanding, and give the student specific feedback on their strengths and how to improve in the course.

There are 5 unsupervised unit take home tests and 2 supervised term tests in Physics 11. Each unit test is intended to take roughly 1.5 hours and the term tests take 1.0 hours. There is no final exam in this course.

The supervised tests are written using a software program called Integrity Advocate. Students are not required to find a test supervisor.

Assessment

Unit 1 Take-home Test 5%
Unit 1 Lab Report 5%
Unit 2 Test (unsupervised) 10%
Unit 3 Test (unsupervised) 10%
Unit 4 Test (unsupervised) 10%
Unit 5 Test (unsupervised) 10%
Unit 5 Lab Report 10%
Unit 6 Test (unsupervised 10%
Unit 6 Research Project 5%
Unit 7 Take-home Test 5%
